Did You Know?
- Onions are very rich in chromium, a trace mineral that helps
cells respond to insulin.
- The “organosulfur compounds” found
in garlic and onions help thin the blood to avoid clots.
- Onions improve the good to bad cholesterol ratio.
- Recent research at the University of Bern in Switzerland found
that post-menopause female rats reduce bone loss by having onions
in their diets.

Gas from Onions or Garlic?
Some people produce gas from eating these vegetables. “Beano”,
however, is available in grocery stores. It is a liquid
enzyme. Three to eight drops on the first spoonful eliminate
potential gas from these foods, including beans. Beano
works on foods cool enough to put in your mouth. If you
sprinkle it on bubbling hot onions, it will become inactive.

Phytochemicals
- Onions contain the
organosulfur compound “Quercetin” which
chips aways at both lung cancer and heart disease. Quercetin
is a tear-inducing compound.
- Onions
also have flavonoids which function as antioxidants helping
to fight oxidation of
bad cholesterol—and also work as
an anti-inflammatory.
